Exercise 1 Latin Suffixes -itudo and -itas
Adjectives that become feminine, 3rd declension nouns when itudo and -itas are added.
- add the suffix to the stem of the adjective
- itudo - the English derivative will have -(i)tudo at the end of the noun
- (i) tas - The English derivative will end in -ly
solus -a -um --- solitudo, solitudinis f. - sollitude
brevis -- brevitas, brevitatis f. --- brevity
vicinus- -a -um -- vicinitas, vicinitatis f. vicinity
Exercise 2
Latin Suffix -ilis, -alis and -arius may be added to nouns to create adjectives.
- ilis becomes -il or -ile (virlis, virile)
- -alis becomes -al (vocalis, vocal)
- -arius becomes -ary (statuarius, statuary)
Give the Latin adjective, the Latin noun derived from it and the meaning of the English word.
There are over 7000 words in English that have come unchaged from the Latin.
